CSLB license renewal

A California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) license expires two years from the last day of the month it was issued. Renew on time or your bid eligibility, contract eligibility, and ability to record a mechanic's lien all evaporate.

The renewal window

  • CSLB mails a renewal application about 60 days before the expiration month.
  • You can renew up to 5 years late but the license is suspended the day after expiration — you cannot legally contract during that gap.
  • Renewing late triggers a delinquency fee in addition to the standard renewal fee.

Active vs inactive renewal

  • Active renewal — keeps your license eligible to bid, contract, and pull permits. Required if you're operating.
  • Inactive renewal — cheaper, but you cannot contract while inactive. Useful if you're temporarily not operating (e.g. owner is on medical leave) and want to preserve the license number.

What STrOp checks

  • The license number is recorded in Settings → Organization → License.
  • Every bid lock checks the license expiration; an expiration within 90 days surfaces an amber warning on the project header; within 30 days, red.
  • If the license is suspended (per the CSLB API), STrOp blocks new bid submissions and shows a banner orgwide.

Bond, workers' comp, and qualifier

Renewal also re-confirms three things — if any is missing, CSLB will not renew:

  • Contractor's Bond — $25,000 minimum, current and naming the licensee.
  • Workers' comp — current certificate on file with CSLB, OR a valid exemption (sole owner with no employees).
  • Qualifier (RME/RMO) — must be active. If your qualifier resigned, you have 90 days to designate a new one or the license is suspended.

Common failure modes

  • Lapsed bond. Bond company didn't auto-renew, CSLB never received the new cert, license is suspended without your knowledge.
  • Workers' comp cert expired. Carrier renewed but didn't file the new cert with CSLB. Cancellation = suspension within ~10 days.
  • Address change. Renewal mailed to old address, you never saw it, expiration came and went.

If you discover you're suspended mid-project, file a ticket as Urgent — blocking. We've helped contractors through retroactive renewal letters with their awarding body.

This is how STrOp works

The data flows you read about here are how the platform threads bid, execution, billing, and closeout. Single pipeline. No re-keying.
