Download the PDF we made

A schedule of values went out to a GC sideways. The page was right. The print dialog was pointed at a Windows "print to PDF" driver, and that driver took a landscape document and laid it on portrait paper, rotated ninety degrees. Nothing on the page could have stopped it, and nothing on our end could see it happen.

That's what a print dialog is: a handoff to whatever printer, real or virtual, is set as the default on that machine. For paper, fine. For the file you attach to an email to a GC, it means the document you send depends on settings we never see.

Every printable document now has a Download PDF button, and it's the first one you'll reach for. It makes the PDF here, on our server, from the same page you're looking at. Same bytes on Windows, Mac, a phone. No dialog. No driver. What you download is what we made.

Print is still there, for paper. It just isn't labelled "Save PDF" any more — that wording was telling you to do the thing that produced a sideways SOV, and we've stopped saying it.

A few notes:

  • It applies everywhere. Pay applications and the full waiver package, the schedule of values, change-order log, PCO proposals, certified payroll, invoices, transmittals, lien waivers, bid sheets, labor-rate sheets, qualification statements, POs, FWOs, service calls.
  • One at a time. The renderer runs on the same machine as the app, and it does one document at a time so it never starves the rest of the app. A second download queued behind a first waits a second or two rather than failing.
  • Landscape stays landscape. Each document already declares its own page size; the download honours it. That was the whole problem, and it's the thing this fixes.
  • Label sheets and the daily report still print. Those are paper by nature; they keep their Print button and lose the "Save PDF" wording.

Coming next: a submitted pay application, an executed change order and a sent PCO will keep the exact PDF that went out, attached to the record — so what you sent is on file, not just what the page shows today.
